Implementing Oracle R12 Advanced Planning Applications

As we approach the one year anniversary of the R12 release, it’s seems a good time to post an article based on our experiences. Quite a few companies are in the process of implementing the R12 Oracle Advanced Planning applications and at least one client I know of has gone live successfully. Many of these projects are also using a R12 source ERP and are part of larger upgrades or new installs.

Two of our clients are implementing Oracle R12 with a source ERP system that is still on release 11.5.10. The Oracle Advanced Planning team has long supported this strategy as one of the benefits of using a de-centralized instance configuration. If you implement Oracle APS applications on a separate instance, then you can upgrade the destination instance without upgrade the source ERP instance. Oracle has supported this strategy since release 11.5.8. It was earlier possible to upgrade the destination instance to 11i10 using 11i7, 11i8, 11i9 ERP instances.

In October 2007, Oracle released patches which allow an 11i10 source instance to be utilized with a destination R12 APS instance. This allows the client to be on the latest Oracle APS release such that they can benefit from new capabilities long before they are ready for an ERP upgrade. I’ll start with that process and explain how this can be achieved.

The next article will explain this process and the patches that are required to implement R12 APS with an 11i10 source instance.

Kevin
