Cargo-handling manufacturer gains increased visibility and strengthens communication with OTM Cloud
Our client is one of the world’s most influential and broad-based cargo-handling organizations. With a presence in 100 countries, the company is widely recognized as a global titan in the shipping container and on-road load handling solutions. While our client specializes in making port work easier by maximizing container volume, communication breakdowns were beginning to pile up.
Our client had very little collaboration with its various suppliers and carriers. For example, once it shipped the equipment, terminals needed to offload containers from ships to docking stations and trucks. There was no way to know, however, where those deliverables were while in transit or when they would arrive. This made providing service updates to customers, who have come to expect real-time updates due to advances in tracking technology, virtually impossible.
Contributing to this problem was the client’s business structure, which includes two distinct units — one for manufacturing and distribution and one for shipping and parts services. Stakeholders in these units were using two different enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions. This made it difficult for the business units to coordinate and communicate with outside suppliers, carriers, and customers. As a result, visibility and communication problems affected the client internally and externally. This also created potential business relationship and financial risks if invoices were lost or unpaid.
